Quick answer: Token tax in Pakistan is set separately by each province, so the same car costs different amounts in Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar. Punjab and Islamabad now charge a percentage of your car's invoice value above 1,000cc — 0.3–0.4% in Punjab, 0.25–0.35% in Islamabad. Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan still charge a fixed rupee amount by engine size, roughly Rs. 1,400–8,000 a year for a private car. Pick your region below to get your figure.
This tool estimates the motor vehicle tax — the annual charge people call "token tax" — using rate tables copied directly from provincial excise schedules and finance acts. Every jurisdiction has its own engine, and every number is dated and linked in the sources section. Where a rate could not be confirmed from an official document, the calculator says so instead of guessing.

Vehicle token tax is the yearly provincial charge that keeps a registered vehicle legally on the road. Its formal name is motor vehicle tax, levied under the Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1958 and administered by each province's Excise & Taxation Department. Once paid, you get a token — historically a paper slip for the windscreen, now usually a database entry a traffic officer can pull up. Unpaid token tax is grounds for a fine, and it blocks ownership transfer.
Three things decide the amount: which province registered the vehicle, what kind of vehicle it is, and engine capacity. Since 2024, Punjab and Islamabad have added a fourth: the invoice value the car was first sold at.
No. Motor vehicle tax was devolved to the provinces, and the five jurisdictions have drifted apart significantly. Punjab and Islamabad charge a percentage of invoice value on anything above 1,000cc. Sindh, KP and Balochistan still use fixed rupee amounts per engine band. Balochistan is the only region where the vehicle's age changes the headline rate directly; Sindh gives age relief through a separate proviso.
Find your province's schedule, find the row matching your vehicle category, then match your engine capacity to a band. In fixed-rate provinces the row is the answer. In Punjab and Islamabad, multiply your car's original invoice value by the percentage for its band. Motorcycles are almost always a one-time lifetime payment rather than a yearly one.
Punjab shifted to invoice-value taxation in 2024 and raised the rates again in the 2026–27 budget. The Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Control Department now publishes a 2026–27 column alongside earlier years.
| Engine capacity | 2026–27 token tax | 2025–26 (for comparison) |
|---|---|---|
| Motorcycle / scooter | Rs. 1,500 once, at registration | Rs. 1,500 |
| Car / jeep up to 1,000cc | Rs. 20,000 once, for the life of the vehicle | Rs. 20,000 |
| 1,001cc – 2,000cc | 0.3% of invoice price, per year | 0.2% of invoice price |
| Above 2,000cc | 0.4% of invoice price, per year | 0.3% of invoice price |

The Punjab Finance Bill 2026 proposed roughly tripling token tax on commercial loader vehicles, and press reporting of the passed Act disagrees on which old rate maps to which new one. Meanwhile the department's own published table still shows the pre-2026 figures. Because two credible sources conflict on the numbers, this calculator will not produce an amount for Punjab goods vehicles — it points you to ePay Punjab instead, where the department's live figure is authoritative.
Sindh is the most stable of the five. Its private-car rates come from the Schedule to the Sindh Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1958, as substituted by the Sindh Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Act, 2021, and no later amendment has changed them. Sindh charges a fixed amount by engine size — invoice value plays no part.
| Engine capacity | Annual token tax |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,000cc | Rs. 1,500 |
| 1,001 – 1,300cc | Rs. 2,000 |
| 1,301 – 1,600cc | Rs. 4,000 |
| 1,601 – 2,000cc | Rs. 4,500 |
| 2,001 – 2,500cc | Rs. 5,000 |
| Above 2,500cc | Rs. 7,000 |

Sindh's age relief is easy to miss. A proviso in the same schedule cuts the tax to 75% once ten years have passed since first registration, and to 50% after fifteen years. A 1,500cc car that has been on the road twenty years pays Rs. 2,000, not Rs. 4,000. The calculator applies this automatically if you enter the registration year.
Sindh also runs lump-sum options the annual table hides. A motorcycle under 149cc that is not yet registered settles at Rs. 1,800 once for all; 150cc and above is Rs. 3,000. An already-registered motorcycle is Rs. 80 a year, or a small one-time figure that falls with age. Cars up to 1,000cc can settle Rs. 20,000 once if not already registered, or Rs. 15,000 if registered three to five years. Which route you take is a choice at the counter, so this calculator shows the annual figure and names the lump-sum alternative underneath.
KP replaced its entire motor vehicle tax schedule through the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Act, 2025, in force from 1 July 2025. If you are reading a KP rate table that shows Rs. 1,000 lifetime for a motorcycle, it predates that Act — the current figure is Rs. 2,500.
| Vehicle | Rate |
|---|---|
| Motorcycle / scooter | Rs. 2,500 for life |
| Private car / jeep / van / pickup, up to 1,000cc | Rs. 2,000 per year |
| 1,001 – 1,300cc | Rs. 3,000 per year |
| 1,301 – 1,500cc | Rs. 4,000 per year |
| 1,501 – 2,500cc | Rs. 5,000 per year |
| Above 2,500cc | Rs. 8,000 per year |
| Private vehicle seating more than 6 | Rs. 1,500 per seat per year |
| Electric four-wheelers | Exempt until 30 June 2028 |
| Tractors, with or without trailer | Rs. 2,000 per year |

KP's goods-vehicle table is unusually granular, running from Rs. 1,500 for a light delivery van up to Rs. 12,000 for a long trailer above 16,000kg — the calculator covers all seven weight bands. The Act also sets a kilowatt-based table for electric four-wheelers, then immediately exempts every one of them until mid-2028, so an EV in KP currently pays nothing.
Balochistan's Excise, Taxation & Anti-Narcotics Department publishes a Schedule of Taxes and Fees, with motor vehicle taxes effective from 1 July 2025. It is the one province where the age of a small car changes the headline treatment, and the one where a lifetime option exists at every engine size.
| Engine capacity | Annual | Lifetime option |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 660cc | Rs. 1,000 (after 5 years) | Rs. 10,500 new · Rs. 9,500 at 5–10 yrs · Rs. 8,500 after 10 yrs |
| 661 – 1,000cc | Rs. 1,100 (after 5 years) | Rs. 12,000 new · Rs. 11,000 at 5–10 yrs · Rs. 10,000 after 10 yrs |
| 1,001 – 1,500cc | Rs. 1,400 | Rs. 17,000 new · Rs. 13,000 after 10 yrs |
| 1,501 – 2,000cc | Rs. 1,700 | Rs. 20,000 new · Rs. 18,000 at 5–10 yrs · Rs. 16,000 after 10 yrs |
| Above 2,000cc | Rs. 2,000 | Rs. 24,000 new · Rs. 22,000 at 5–10 yrs |
| Motorcycle / scooter | Rs. 1,500 for life | |
| Rickshaw | Rs. 2,000 per year | |
| Pickup / delivery van | Rs. 2,000 per year | |
| Tractor (agricultural) | Exempt | |

Two lifetime figures in that document contain apparent typographic errors and are omitted above rather than guessed at. Balochistan also charges a Rs. 120 per quarter penalty on late payment. Checked 19 August 2026.
Below 1,000cc, Balochistan treats the tax as a lifetime levy first: a new car pays a single lump sum, and only once it has passed five years does an annual figure appear as an alternative. Above 1,000cc the annual amount is the default and the lifetime figure is optional.
Islamabad changed the most this year. The Finance Act 2026 substituted Tables 2 to 5 in the Schedule to the West Pakistan Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1958 as it applies in ICT, replacing flat engine-capacity fees with invoice-value percentages from 1 July 2026.
| Engine capacity | Token tax from 1 July 2026 |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,000cc | Rs. 20,000 |
| 1,001 – 1,300cc | 0.25% of invoice value |
| 1,301 – 1,500cc | 0.25% of invoice value |
| 1,501 – 2,000cc | 0.25% of invoice value |
| 2,001 – 2,500cc | 0.35% of invoice value |
| 2,501cc and above | 0.35% of invoice value |

The practical effect is that two identical 1,500cc sedans can now owe different amounts if one was a higher trim. Invoice value means the original invoice price on record with the Motor Registration Authority — not the car's current resale value, and not what you paid a private seller. Motor cab rates were revised in the same Act, but only four of its six cab bands have been confirmed from a reliable transcript; the calculator returns those four and declines the rest.
Both administer their own vehicle taxes. The Gilgit-Baltistan Excise & Taxation Department states that it currently collects token taxes and runs motor vehicle registration across all districts, but neither GB nor AJK publishes a machine-readable rate schedule that can be verified the way the five tables above can. This calculator therefore does not produce a figure for AJK or Gilgit-Baltistan. Selecting either region returns a pointer to the relevant department rather than an invented number. If you have an official AJK or GB notification, send it to us and we will add the jurisdiction.
Included: the provincial motor vehicle tax for the period you are paying, and any provincial rebate or age relief that attaches to it.
Not included, even though several of these are collected at the same counter on the same challan:
| Charge | Who levies it | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Registration fee | Provincial excise | Once, when a new vehicle is first registered |
| Transfer of ownership fee | Provincial excise | Each time the vehicle changes hands |
| Advance income tax (s. 234) | FBR, collected by excise | Yearly with the token; adjustable against your return; stops at 10 years |
| Advance tax on registration (s. 231B) | FBR, collected by excise | Once, at registration or transfer |
| Capital value tax (CVT) | Provincial | Punjab: on transfer and new registration above 1,300cc, for 5 years |
| Luxury tax | Provincial | Once, at registration of higher-capacity cars |
| Professional tax | Provincial | Rs. 200 in Punjab, collected alongside the token |
| Late-payment surcharge | Provincial excise | When the token is paid after the due date |
You will normally need the registration number alone. Nothing on this page asks for it — the calculator works purely from vehicle characteristics, so no personal or vehicle identifier ever leaves your device.

Last verified: 19 August 2026. Government rates change through budgets, finance acts, gazette notifications and revised schedules — usually on 1 July, but sometimes mid-year. We re-read the official sources listed above periodically and update this page and its rate tables when they change. There is no automatic feed: the figures here are entered by hand from the source documents, which is why each one carries a date.
Vehicle token tax is the annual provincial motor vehicle tax that keeps a registered vehicle legally on the road. It is charged under the Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1958 and collected by each province's Excise & Taxation Department. The amount depends on the province of registration, the vehicle category and engine capacity — and in Punjab and Islamabad, on the car's original invoice value.
Match your vehicle to a row in your province's schedule, then match your engine capacity to a band within that row. In Sindh, KP and Balochistan the band gives you a fixed rupee amount. In Punjab and Islamabad, anything above 1,000cc is a percentage of the invoice value instead — 0.3% or 0.4% in Punjab, 0.25% or 0.35% in Islamabad.
A car up to 1,000cc pays Rs. 20,000 once, for the life of the vehicle. From 1,001cc to 2,000cc it is 0.3% of the invoice price each year, and above 2,000cc it is 0.4%. On a Rs. 4,500,000 invoice at 1,500cc, that works out to Rs. 13,500 a year — Rs. 12,150 if you pay the full year by 31 August and take the 10% rebate.
Rs. 1,500, charged once at the time of registration rather than annually. If the motorcycle is transferred within ten years of registration, Rs. 1,500 becomes payable again with a 10% rebate for each financial year that has elapsed.
Find your engine band in the Sindh schedule: Rs. 1,500 up to 1,000cc, Rs. 2,000 to 1,300cc, Rs. 4,000 to 1,600cc, Rs. 4,500 to 2,000cc, Rs. 5,000 to 2,500cc, Rs. 7,000 above that. Then apply the age proviso: 75% of the rate once ten years have passed since first registration, 50% after fifteen.
KP uses fixed annual amounts set by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Act, 2025: Rs. 2,000 up to 1,000cc, Rs. 3,000 to 1,300cc, Rs. 4,000 to 1,500cc, Rs. 5,000 to 2,500cc and Rs. 8,000 above 2,500cc. Age and invoice value make no difference. Motorcycles pay Rs. 2,500 once for life, and electric four-wheelers pay nothing until 30 June 2028.
Through your province's official channel: ePay Punjab or the Punjab excise calculator, the Sindh excise portal and Excise Sindh app, the Dastak platform in KP, the Balochistan excise calculator, and the PAK App for Islamabad. Each returns your live dues from the department's own database, which is the figure you actually pay.
Yes — on the official provincial portals and apps, entering the registration number pulls up your vehicle record and outstanding dues. This calculator deliberately does not ask for one. It works from engine capacity and vehicle type alone, so nothing identifying leaves your phone.
Everywhere, yes — but in different ways. In Sindh, KP and Balochistan, engine capacity alone sets the amount. In Punjab and Islamabad, engine capacity decides which percentage band applies, and the invoice value then decides the amount within that band.
Both, depending on the vehicle and the province. Motorcycles are a one-time lifetime payment in Punjab, KP and Balochistan. Cars up to 1,000cc are lifetime in Punjab. Balochistan offers a lifetime option at every engine size, and Sindh offers one for small cars and motorcycles. Everything else is annual.
A surcharge accrues, traffic police can fine you for not holding a valid token, and the vehicle can be impounded during checking drives. Unpaid dues also block ownership transfer — a seller has to clear them before the excise office will process a transfer. Surcharge rules differ by province; Balochistan's schedule sets Rs. 120 per quarter, and Punjab moved to quarterly rather than monthly accrual in 2026.
No. Advance income tax under section 234 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 is a federal tax that the excise department collects on FBR's behalf at the same counter. It appears on the same challan but it is a separate charge, it is adjustable against your annual return, and it stops applying once the vehicle is ten years old. This calculator shows it on its own line, never folded into the token figure.
No. Transfer of ownership fees, capital value tax and section 231B advance tax are all charged when a vehicle changes hands, not as part of the annual token. What token tax does affect is whether the transfer can proceed: outstanding dues must be cleared first.
For KP and Balochistan, yes — both publish complete weight-banded and per-seat tables and the calculator implements them in full. For Punjab, taxis and motor cabs are covered but goods vehicles are not, because the 2026 rates are in dispute between sources. For Sindh and ICT, commercial coverage is partial and the calculator says which categories it can and cannot handle.
Yes, and it matters if you live in the Rawalpindi–Islamabad corridor. Both moved to invoice-value taxation, but at different rates and different bands. From 1 July 2026, Islamabad charges 0.25% up to 2,000cc and 0.35% above; Punjab charges 0.3% up to 2,000cc and 0.4% above. Islamabad also has no equivalent of Punjab's 10% early-payment rebate.
Most commonly once a year, on 1 July, through a provincial or federal finance act. Some schedules go untouched for years — Sindh's private-car bands have stood since 2021 — while others move in consecutive years, as Punjab's did in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Mid-year changes by gazette notification are possible but uncommon.
With the excise department that registered your vehicle. Their portal or app queries the live record, which accounts for arrears, penalties, exemptions and anything unusual in your file that a rate table cannot know about. Treat this calculator as a way to budget and sanity-check, and the department's figure as the one to pay.
Only where a province publishes a fixed, unambiguous rule — Balochistan's Rs. 120 per quarter is included as a separate line. Elsewhere, surcharge depends on how many quarters or months have lapsed and on departmental practice, so the calculator leaves it out and says so rather than estimating.
Not much, and in KP not at all. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa exempts electric four-wheelers entirely until 30 June 2028. Punjab's published schedule exempts 95% of the motor vehicle tax. Balochistan taxes EVs by converting motor power in kilowatts to an equivalent engine capacity. Concessions here change often, so confirm before you pay.

This calculator provides an estimate based on the latest publicly available government tax rules and rates. The actual payable amount may vary depending on your vehicle record, registration status, arrears, penalties, government updates and other applicable charges. Verify the final amount with the relevant provincial or ICT Excise & Taxation Department before payment.
It estimates token tax only. It does not include registration, transfer, withholding tax, CVT or other government charges unless a line item specifically shows them.
